Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a well-known protected area dedicated to preserving the reintroduced endangered white rhinos in Uganda since 2005. Nestled on 27 square miles of diverse landscape, including woodlands, swamps, and savannah, the ranch serves as a sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife. Among its inhabitants are Rhinoceroses, Giant pangolins, Leopards, Rothschild Giraffes, Jackson's Hartebeests, Zebras, oribi, Scrub hares, Ugandan kobs, Waterbucks, Bushbucks, Bohor reedbucks, Common duikers, Warthogs, Vervet monkeys, Bush pigs, and Aardvarks.
In addition to mammals, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary’s diverse ecosystems, which consist of wetlands, savannahs, and woodlands, host more than 300 bird species. Among them are the Shoebill Stork, Green-Winged Pytilia, Klaas’s Cuckoo, Little Sparrowhawk, Lizard Buzzard, Long-Tailed Starling, Nubian Woodpecker, Purple Starling, Red-Headed Weaver, Red-Shouldered Cuckoo shrike, and Black-Headed Heron. This rich avian biodiversity makes the sanctuary an ideal destination for birdwatching.
At Ziwa, visitors engage in a 2-hour captivating adventure of tracking rhinos by trekking through the sanctuary with an armed and experienced ranger. The tracking experience offers an opportunity to encounter these endangered mammals up close.
