Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, adjacent to the Rift Valley and bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, near Virunga National Park. The park covers 332 square kilometers of montane and lowland forest and is only accessible by foot. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization designated the park as a World Heritage Site in 1994.

Bwindi’s climate

Bwindi has a tropical climate with annual mean temperatures ranging from 7 to 27°C and rainfall from 1400 to 1900mm. The peak rainfall periods are from March to April and September to November.

Altitude

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers four trekking sectors, each with varying altitudes. The Buhoma sector lies at the northern edge of the forest at an elevation of 1,500 meters above sea level. The Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors, located in the southern part of the park, sit at 1,900 meters and 2,100 meters, respectively. Ruhija, in the eastern part of the park, is the highest sector, standing at 2,350 meters above sea level.

Wildlife and Avian species

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including 120 mammal species, among are 10 primate species, and more than 45 species of small mammals. Among its primates, the most notable are mountain gorillas. The park is a sanctuary for over 500 mountain gorillas, representing nearly half of the world's remaining population of this critically endangered species.

The park is also home to numerous bird species, making it a haven for birding enthusiasts and nature lovers. It boasts about 360 bird species, showcasing the rich avian biodiversity of the region. Among these, the park is particularly notable for hosting 23 species endemic to the Albertine Rift, a globally significant biodiversity hotspot. These endemic species are unique to this region, underscoring the park's ecological importance as a sanctuary for rare and specialized wildlife.
