Lake Kivu
Rwanda Western Rwanda
Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest water body, located in the western part of the country, within the Albertine Rift Valley, along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Surrounded by lush forested hills and volcanic mountains, the lake spans approximately 90 kilometers in length and covers a surface area of 2,700 square kilometers.
Due to the lake’s calm waters and the absence of dangerous wildlife such as hippos and crocodiles, Lake Kivu is an ideal location for water-based adventure activities. Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports, including speedboat rides, kayaking, canoeing, and jet skiing. While engaging in these outdoor activities, participants also have the opportunity to observe numerous bird species around the lush islands.
The shores of Lake Kivu feature numerous well-developed accommodation options, providing a serene and enjoyable atmosphere for vacations, honeymoons, and business trips. Due to the prime location of the resorts along the shoreline, they offer stunning views of the lake and the scenic surrounding landscape.
In addition to accommodations and water sports, Lake Kivu and its surroundings offer visitors numerous engaging experiences. These include moderate hiking trails, rejuvenating hot spring baths, birdwatching opportunities, and immersive coffee plantation tours.
