Uganda’s Rhino Conservation Journey

Rhino tracking in Uganda has developed through efforts to restore southern white rhinos, which became extinct in the wild in the early 1980s due to poaching, habitat loss, and insecurity.

Conservation and breeding programmes later supported their recovery, with Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary becoming the centre of Uganda’s rhino restoration efforts.

Rhino tracking in Uganda is expanding beyond Ziwa as rhinos are reintroduced to other protected areas.

In January 2026, four southern white rhinos were translocated from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to Ajai Wildlife Reserve, creating Uganda’s second rhino-tracking destination.

In March 2026, the Uganda Wildlife Authority began reintroducing rhinos to Kidepo Valley National Park, creating potential for future rhino tracking opportunities.

Rhino Tracking Experience

Rhino tracking involves a two-hour guided walk with an experienced, armed ranger, following tracks, movements, feeding signs, and other clues to locate rhinos on foot.

The ranger guides the search, explains how rhino signs are interpreted, and shares information about the species’ behaviour, habitat, and conservation history.

Once rhinos are located, visitors observe them from a safe distance while the ranger explains their behaviour, movements, and social interactions.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is Uganda’s established rhino-tracking destination and the centre of the country’s rhino breeding and conservation programme, supporting its largest population of southern white rhinos.

Ajai Wildlife Reserve
