Nature Walks
Adventure Easy 2-4 hours
Nature walks are guided strolls through wetlands, woods, or wildlife reserves that provide learning and observation of the local flora and fauna. In Uganda, guided nature walks in private establishments or protected areas are essential for in-depth investigation as they provide people with an opportunity to create a connection with the natural world.
In Uganda, nature walks take place in the following protected areas:
A) Murchison Falls National Park
In Murchison Falls National Park, there are nature treks to the top of the falls. After the boat docks at the bottom of the falls, hikers ascend the hill to view the world's most powerful waterfall. The trek to the top of the falls typically takes thirty to thirty-five minutes.
There are several pathways in the Kaniyo Pabidi and Rabongo woods, where you might see primates and birds.
B) Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park offers nature walks throughout its many ecosystems. There are paths along Lake George, the Mweya Peninsula, the Katwe Salt Lake, and the Kyambura Gorge. Strolling along Lake George's edges increases your chances of spotting the elusive shoebill and the semi-aquatic Sitatunga antelope. In addition to trekking to witness traditional salt mining, Katwe Salt Lake is home to many primate species, including chimpanzees, in the Kyambura Gorge.
C) Virunga Mountains
There are hiking trails across the slopes of the Virunga Mountains, particularly on Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhabura. In addition to the stunning views of the surrounding lakes and rural communities, this adventure puts you near nature and increases your chances of observing uncommon bird species.
D) Kibale Forest National Park
There are well-maintained and developed nature walk pathways in Kibale National Park. Forest walks are flexible, lasting from three hours to shorter durations depending on your time and interests. You could see a variety of primates, animals, and forest-dwelling bird species while on the nature walks. For guests interested in spotting nocturnals such as bats, owls, pottos, civets, and bush babies, the park authorities allow a nighttime nature walk.
E) Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, there are several trails where nature walks can last many hours, offering the chance to observe a diverse range of animal, bird, butterfly, and primate species.
F) Other significant locations with nature walking opportunities are Semliki National Park, Lake Mburo National Park, Bigodi Swamp near Kibale Forest, and the foothills of Mount Rwenzori.
G) In Rwanda, nature walks occur in the Volcanoes National Park, particularly after hiking up Mount Bisoke to Diana Fossey's tomb or from Nyungwe Forest National Park.
